Our life has been changed in the past few months because of COVID-19. Wearing a mask became a part of etiquette in order to protect us from the virus and a social distancing is forced by the government all over the world. Despite all the negative effects of COVID-19, there is one positive thing that has happened on Earth. When COVID-19 was acting up all over the world during the spring season, the world economy was stopped at once. Factories stopped producing air pollution, and small businesses closed down in order to prevent contagion of the virus. People started to work from home, so all vehicles stopped. Travel has been banned by air, water, and earth. As a result, the earth was healing itself. The ocean is getting clear and air quality has been improved. Wild animals are coming back, and forests are getting greener.
While the earth was trying her best to heal herself, air quality in South Korea became dramatically changed. Before COVID-19, South Korea air quality was one of the worst compared to other OECD countries, Yellow dust and coal-fired power plants from China caused major air pollution in South Korea. However, that was not the complete reason. The fast-growing economy in South Korea since the Korean War also became a part of the cause. Wearing a mask was a part of Korean’s life long before COVID-19. The air purifier is a must-have item in every household. Our government tried their best to warn of the danger of air quality and put their effort into improving the situation.
However, we shouldn't worry too much about this fact. All Koreans became experts at preventing air pollution from their lives. Since you are here for a year or two, we will give you a few tips to protect yourself from air pollution.

2. Take advantage of South Korea’s convenient public transportations.
You are probably considering whether you need to purchase a vehicle or not when you get here. Since the Osan Airbase’s walking gate area is a walkable distance, you can easily use an eco-friendly scooter or a bicycle when you go to work. Songtan subway station and bus terminal are within 10mins walking distance away from the main gate, you can easily travel to other cities. In addition, Korean taxis are very cheap and convenient compared to the USA. Using public transportation instead of driving your own vehicle will help to improve the Osan AB’s air quality.

3. Use energy-efficient electronics and reduce the usage of electricity
All Korean electronics are separated by electricity usage grade. If you move into the off base housing, you will see the first-grade electronics around the house. These electronics save your utility bills and save the environment as well. Also, make sure to unplug electronics when you are not using them.
4. Use the air purifier while you are staying in Osan AB on and off base housing
The air purifier became a common household good in South Korea. Use your air purifier when you are at home and clean the filter as often as possible. If you already have an air purifier at your off base housing, please ask your landlord or realtor about the maintenance schedule. Normally, a service technician will visit every six months and changes the filter.
5. You need to do your laundry as often as possible
After coming back from the outdoors, micro dust and fine dust will stick onto your clothing. Every time you move with these clothes, you will breathe dust without knowing even if you are inside the house. Therefore, we strongly recommend washing your clothing once you’ve worn it. There is an electronic call “Styler” which will help to remove dust and odor from your clothes. However, the price is between $1,000 to $1,400, so research before you purchase this gadget if you want to have one.
